We are the brothers Paul and Steven Smith, the owners of Hotel Fonda Vela.  We grew up on this property.  We built and manage the Hotel.  Our goal is to promote a greater understanding of the environment. We encourage our guests and visitors to experience this unique habitat.

In 1951, Quakers from the State of Alabama, U.S.A., migrated to Monteverde in pursuit of a peaceful lifestyle. Since 1951, about 6000 people have settled in the Santa Elena/Monteverde area.  Hotel Fonda Vela is located in the Monteverde community and, like the first Quaker settlers, promotes the ideas of peace, friendship, and harmony with nature.
In 1972, the naturalist George Powell began a conservation effort now known as the Monteverde Reserve.  The Reserve has become a premier example of a cloud forest ecosystem.  In 1987, we felt that our farm, close to the Reserve, was a perfect place to host visitors to the area.  In 1990, we started the Hotel Fonda Vela to provide luxurious accommodations in harmony with the surrounding wonder and beauty of nature.  We hope that you will visit us in this unique and beautiful area.
Today, on its 35 acres, the profound gift of Nature is what Hotel Fonda Vela offers our guests.  Situated near the continental divide, Hotel Fonda Vela is home to some sixty different species of migratory birds, and over 200 species of non-migratory birds.  It is possible to see the rare Resplendent Quetzal, Three-wattled Bellbird, the Blue Crowned Motmot, the Swallow-tailed Kites, and a great variety of hummingbirds. You can also see a variety of reptiles, frogs, and small mammals.  Some of the animals are indigenous to the area, and can only be found here.  We have planted additional native trees and flowers to add to the beauty of the already existing forest.

Surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens, our buildings are an attractive part of the lush, tropical mountainside.  The rooms are cozy, yet elegant, spacious and comfortable. Each room is designed with the environment in mind. For example, large windows help to bring the outdoors inside. We have two restaurants. "The Galería" Restaurant has a capacity of 100 people and has large windows with beautiful, tropical views. "The Fireside Room" seats 40 people in an intimate and cozy atmosphere.  We also have a lounge/conference room and the delightful Canopy Bar.
